Every human being has their own soul. The Soul emerges when we awaken from the sleep of our daily life and look beyond our five senses to discover a richer and more meaningful inner world. In the past 3 month, during our study in school of Housing, Building and Planning, our soul have been shift to become better because we have train to build up our inner world, for example, patient and teamwork. While externally nothing may change, our inner perceptions have changed and the palette of our lives reveals magical hues and tones that once we could not see nor know.
We are from the student of construction management. Construction Management is the overall planning, co-ordination and control of a project from inception to completion aimed at meeting a client’s requirements in order to produce a functionally and financially viable project that will be completed on time within authorized cost and to the required quality standards.
Construction managers are those who responsible for coordinating the construction of large building projects such as hotels, factories, office blocks, home unit developments, schools, hospitals and large housing developments. On a
residential building site, the construction project manager is responsible for
coordinating all aspects of the job.
Typical duties of a construction management:
· Interpret plans and estimate costs and quantities of materials needed;
· Plan construction methods and procedures;
· Coordinate the supply of labour and materials;
· Supervise construction sites and direct site managers and subcontractors to
make sure standards of building performance, quality, cost schedules and
safety are maintained;
· Study building contract documents and negotiate with building owners and
Subcontractors;
· Control preparation of cost estimates and the documentation for contract bids;
· Control payment to subcontractors by valuation of completed works;
· Make sure that building regulations, standards and by-laws are enforced in
building operations;
· Consult with architects, engineers and other technical workers to make sure
that design intentions are met.
Therefore, as a construction manager that handles a construction from start to finish, we need to well-developed our communication skills, has the ability to interpret plans and drawings, management and leadership ability, problem-solving ability and able to manage and run a business enterprise.
What is the thing we should develop in order to have these skills? That is spiritual development.
The term spirituality has to be understood in a very broad way, it comprises our relation to invisible beings, like for example God, angels, spiritual guides, none incarnated souls and other non-incarnated beings. Spirituality also comprises questions about the meaning of life and about our personal attitude towards life as a whole and all its related goals and cycles. Development is the act of improving by expanding or enlarging or refining. It has many meaning with the different refer, such as business, estate, geography, political, architecture, social science, and sport science and medicine. For example, estate development are the process of adding improvements on or to a parcel of land. Such improvements may include drainage, utilities, subdividing, access, buildings, and any combination of these elements.
Spiritual development relate about we develop our spiritual to become a mature people, for the next major step in our life. Spiritual development also known as spiritual growth, is the development to enlarge the consciousness. As such, spiritual growth is an integral part of our purpose of life. Spiritual development should serve to understand our life and our life's tasks better and thereby to achieve our purpose of life more easily. A contact to the spiritual world can be in particularly helpful to sense and confirm one's goals and tasks of life. In addition, this spiritual contact can be a tremendously important guide and assistance in our daily life.
The most important aspect in spiritual development is to understand the importance of principled behaviour. Generally what happens is that man’s character is moulded by his emotions — anger, revenge, jealousy, hatred, rivalry, etc. The result is that his personality is shaped by negative feelings. What man ought to do is to become disciplined in such matters. He should not build his character under the influence of external incentives, but by his own decisions he should establish it on the basis of higher spiritual development – the principles of life. When one trains oneself based on the principles of life, he is able to develop a positive personality.
Besides, there are so many advantages that we can get in the spiritual development. The advantages are as follow:
- help a person to understand and bridge the dualities of life - the positives and negatives, the higher road and the lower road
Spiritual development helps a person to determine which track is positive or negative. It attempts to shows the moral concepts, such as the concept of good and evil. Once a person is undergoing spiritual development, their modes of thinking will change. They will think more positively and more rational in making choices. They have more wisdom and able to resist the temptation. As a construction manager, we able to determine the right track. For example, a manager who have spiritual development will not receive bribe for own advantage.
- bring personality and soul together in full
A person who undergoing spiritual development will have good personality, such as generous, friendly, patient and so on. For example, with the spirit which they have, they are collective and like to help each other. They think that generosity allows them not only to survive but to thrive. Thus can be a good manager that have good characteristics and able to work corporative with his/her teammates.
- support a person in grounding spirituality in everyday living
Spiritual development makes life more meaningful. Life is a spiritual journey. When we look at it that way, we can finally begin to make sense of our world. We can understand why we suffer and how we can ease our suffering. And we can at last find a path to the love, joy and peace that is our birth right.
- awaken a person to qualities of his/her authentic self
It can create awareness of people on what’s going on around them as well as the world. Moreover, they will also be more active and often involve in various activities as the spirit has motivated them. They will find out life is actually meaningful and the enthusiasm will increases. They are more passionate in doing things and find a lot of joy throughout the process.
- open the door to new levels of freedom, power and contentment
Through spiritual development people will look forward and think positively. They will treat problem as challenge. Therefore, although life is tough, they will able to face the challenge happily. Thus, they have their freedom of life. A manager who has spiritual development will have the ability to solve their difficulties and face the obstacles in their life.
There are six essential key that we need to know in order to develop our spiritual. They are:
1. Control of thoughts.
It is important because our mind is like a sponge. It takes in everything that is subjected to it, whether good or bad. As a student, we have to be flexible. We must be able to accept critics and ideas to improve ourselves. It is extremely important to control our thoughts and only allow what we want into our minds. Staying focus is one of the main elements for us to work under pressure.
2. Control of our actions.
Think before we act, never make hasty decision and regret later. Don't blame others for the life we live. We are responsible for controlling our thoughts and thus our destiny. Don't envy people who seem to have it all. Train your minds, change your brain and discipline your actions. Instead, keep pushing yourself to work more because the one who is successful is the one who work the most. We have to carry out actions through our thoughts, don’t just building castle in the air, take action and do it! Besides that, we have to manage our time well. Planning and arranging our time well promote us as better construction manager.
3. Equanimity.
Equanimity is a state of mental or emotional stability or composure arising from a sense of temporal detachment from reality. People fluctuate back and forth between joy and sorrow. In order to reach equanimity and steadiness we must become steadfast and even-tempered. In construction firm, the on-going projects and workforces are heavy. Stress will eventually act as an obstacle if we can’t manage to handle it.
4. Understand every being.
Being able to understand each other enhance spiritual intimacy. Communication skills are very important in management. We must be able to communicate, share ideas and see things in different aspects. By being in others’ shoe, we can understand our group members and this allows good cooperation among each other.
5. Complete openness.
Change our patterns and open our minds. We must always stay alert with the possibility of learning something new. As a student, we must be far-sighted and see the potential in everything. We must think out of the box, being innovative and creative. Keep coming out with extraordinary and impressive ideas, you would definitely inspire people around you. Anything is possible if you open your mind to infinite possibilities.
6. Inner harmony.
After we have developed the first five keys, we would develop inner harmony.
Spiritual development is very important not for construction management only but for all human beings. Why? Because it is one of the major key that can change our chaos world now. So for spiritual development, we need to make the choice. what is choice? What choice we can make?
Choices consist of the mental process of judging the merits of multiple options and selecting one of them. Most of the time people regard having choices is a good thing. They will feel discomfort if the choice is limited or restricted. However, when people has unlimited choice, they may confuse and regret for not taking the alternatives.
There are four types of decisions, although they can be expressed in different ways. Brian Tracy, breaks them down into a few types. Firstly, command decisions, which can only be made by you, as the "Commander in Chief"; or owner of a company. Next was, delegated decisions, which may be made by anyone, such as the colour of the bike shed, and should be delegated, as the decision must be made but the choice is inconsequential. Thirdly, avoided decisions, where the outcome could be so severe that the choice should not be made, as the consequences cannot be recovered from if the wrong choice is made. This will most likely result in negative actions, such as death. Lastly was a “No-brainer” decision, where the choice is so obvious that only one choice can reasonably be made.
Spiritual development is the development of insights, principles, beliefs, attitudes and values which guide and motivate us. As from the issue; we are fast asleep in a box, we should make up our choice through action. Choices were both options of yes and no, it is up to us. If option yes was our choice, we choose to accept the spiritual development in our own self and have to act to make us stay awake from asleep in a box. Every choice we make leads us closer to or further from our goals. Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life; it is the creative power of life.
After we had decided what our choice is, we need to take action. Sometimes people didn’t know what is our choice, but they will know through every action that we do in our life.
For the RUS 101 in the past 3 month, the lecturer didn’t aim student to develop their drawing skill but to sharpen or change student mind set or perspective towards their live and the world through all the lecture and assignment. And the students have the choice to choose whether they want follow the lecturer and change their mind set or continue his/her own old style. How lecturers know whether the student has change or not, is through the student assignment. Student will express their choice through the action that is through the assignment.
Another example is from the 2012 issue that we discussed in our lecture. Some students choose to believe and some student said it won’t happen. No matter what will happen in 2012, people have started to take action that possibly will prevent it.
In conclusion, the ultimate purpose for spiritual development is to let people awake. Through spiritual development as a construction manager, we will have positive mind set and correct attitude towards our job. We can lead and cooperate with the team, manage the project in order, solve the problem that occur during the construction and complete the project on time within authorized cost and to the required quality standards. As a human, we will clear with our purpose of life and develop our character and become a better person. Only when people choose to develop spiritual then only they will awake on what is the purpose of life, and we all human are actually in one team! Spiritual development can’t be done in one day; it is through day-day encounter. As our spirit growth, one day we may achieve our goal; AWAKENING AS ONE.

And the best part is we are in control to steer.
In whichever way we want to go.
It can be in a safe path or the wrong path.
Which may lead up to a crash.
So we are in control of our life.
